Why We Use Premium Penrite Oils and Ryco Filters

The right grade for the engine
Modern engines run tight tolerances and specific oil grades. The grade is the viscosity, how thick the oil is cold and hot, and the spec is the additive package the manufacturer approved for that engine. Use the wrong grade and the oil's too thin when hot to hold the film, or too thick when cold to flow on start-up, which is when most engine wear happens. We use the Penrite grade and spec your car calls for, not a generic, because the correct grade protects the bearings on start-up and the cams at operating temperature. A warranty claim on a lubrication failure can ask for the oil grade used, and a generic grade won't hold up.
Why a cheap filter costs you
The oil filter's job is to strip abrasive contaminants out of the oil before they circulate. A cheap filter with thin media and a poor bypass valve does two things wrong. It lets particles through, which wear the bearings, the cams, and the turbo. And it restricts the flow when it loads up, which opens the bypass and sends unfiltered oil through the engine anyway, so you're running on abrasive-laden oil for the last five thousand kilometres of the interval. A Ryco filter meets the flow and filtration spec the manufacturer set, so the oil stays clean for the full service interval and the engine doesn't wear faster than it needs to.
What the oil actually does in there
Oil does four jobs. It separates the metal surfaces so the crank doesn't weld itself to the bearings. It carries heat away from the pistons and the cylinder head. It suspends the combustion byproducts so the filter can catch them instead of them settling as sludge in the sump. And it neutralises the acids that form from fuel and moisture blow-by. An oil that's sheared down, thinned from the heat and the mechanical load, can't hold the film, and the metal-to-metal contact starts. That's the wear that shortens an engine's life, and it's the wear a quality oil resists for longer, because the oil is cheaper than the bearing it protects.
The tradeoff on service intervals
The manufacturer interval is the minimum for average use. Short trips, towing, or dusty conditions all break the oil down faster, because the oil never gets hot enough to burn off the moisture and fuel that condense in it. A car that does five-kilometre trips around Campbellfield might need the oil changed before the schedule says, and a car that tows or does a lot of dirt-road k's definitely does. We flag it when the oil's done early, and we won't stretch a service to save you a few weeks if the oil's telling us it's past it. The oil's the cheaper part by a long way, and the engine it protects is the expensive one.
Warranty and the stamp
Using manufacturer-approved or original-equipment-quality parts and fluids, and stamping the logbook, keeps your new car warranty valid under Australian Consumer Law. Penrite and Ryco meet that standard, so the warranty and the engine are both covered. We use them on every logbook service, and we stamp the book, so the history's clean and the warranty's intact. A service without the stamp is a service the dealer can query, and a service with the wrong oil is a service that risks the cover. Read our logbook servicing guide for the full picture.
The filter you can't see
The filter's the part nobody sees, and it's the part that does the quiet work. A filter that's blocked slows the oil flow and opens the bypass, and the oil runs through the engine unfiltered, which is the same as running no filter at all. A filter that's split lets the contaminants straight through, and a filter with a weak anti-drainback valve leaves the top end dry on start-up, which is the worst time for the oil not to be there. We fit Ryco because the filter decides whether the oil does its job, and the oil decides how long the engine lasts.
