Afterpay & Zip Pay: Spreading the Cost of Repairs Safely

How it works at the workshop
Afterpay and Zip Pay split the cost into equal instalments, typically four fortnightly payments for Afterpay. You approve the job, we do the work, you drive the car away, and you pay it off over a few weeks rather than in one hit. Approval runs through the provider's app, not us, and it's subject to their standard terms and your account standing. We don't set the repayment schedule or the fees, and we don't see your bank details. What we do is give you an honest quote up front so the amount you're splitting is the amount you actually owe, with no surprises and no add-ons. The payment plan's on the final invoice, not the parts list.
When spreading the cost makes sense
Buy-now-pay-later suits a repair you can't safely delay and can't absorb in one hit. Brakes, tyres, a battery, a cooling system failure, the jobs where driving on the worn part risks a crash or a breakdown. You get the safety-critical fix done now and spread the cost over the pay cycles that follow. The car's safe, you're not stranded, and the payments land when the money's there. That's the use case it's built for, and it works, because the alternative is driving on worn brakes until payday and hoping the wet road doesn't catch you out first.
When it's the wrong call
It's not a substitute for a savings plan on routine servicing. Spreading every oil change across a payment plan is how small debts stack up, because Afterpay and Zip are separate to your other bills and it's easy to lose track of how many are running at once. It's also not the move for a big discretionary job you could plan and save for, like a restoration or a modification you don't need. Those are jobs you save for, not finance. If the repair can wait a month, save for a month. If it can't, that's what the payment plan's for. The honest test is whether the repair's a safety item, and if it is, the plan makes sense, and if it isn't, it doesn't.
Honest pricing either way
Using Afterpay or Zip doesn't change what we charge. The quote's the same whether you pay in full or in instalments, and it's written down before any work starts so you sign off on it before we turn a spanner. We don't upsell work to inflate a financed job, because the whole point of an owner-operated workshop is that you're talking to the bloke doing the work, not a commission structure. If a part's fine, we tell you. If it's worn, we show you the measurement and the spec. Read why an owner-operated workshop matters for more on how that works, because the way we charge doesn't change with how you pay.
What it doesn't cover
Afterpay and Zip are for the repair, not for the service plan. They don't cover diagnostic time on a fault we can't find, and they don't cover work the car doesn't need. We won't add a set of plugs to a brake job just to bump the financed amount, because that's not how we work and it's not what the payment plan's for. The plan's there to help you spread a real repair, not to help us sell you more work. If the quote's for the brakes and the quote's honest, the payment plan's honest too, and that's the only way we use it.
